AN UPROARIOUS BACKSTAGE COMEDY The Indiana Repertory Theatre’s season finale, Noises Off by Michael Frayn, is a lusciously silly comedy that serves up generous doses of heat-inducing laughter. Called “the funniest farce ever written,” Noises Off, a British term for off-stage sound effects, presents a manic menagerie of actors who are rehearsing a flop called Nothing On where everything goes wrong.
“We produce a farce like Noises Off to remind ourselves of the healing and cleansing power of comedy; there is a real joy in watching physical bodies in space, batting the environment around them,” said Janet Allen, IRT’s Executive Artistic Director. Although many things have changed since the IRT’s first production of Noises Off , in the 1998-1999 season, several things have remained the same including a 360 degree rotating set and the promise of rehearsal implosions, backstage shenanigans and onstage disasters that have the cast on life support—and will have the audience in stitches. The cast features the familiar faces of Ryan Artzberger (A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet), Ashley Dillard (A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet), Mehry Eslaminia (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) and Robert Neal (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Romeo and Juliet), as well as some new faces including Will Allen, Heidi Kettering, Hollis Resnik, Jerry Richardson and Rob Riley. Director David Bradley will lead the cast and creative team toward what audiences have deemed a spectacularly funny, dizzying festival of delirium. “A farce is an underdog story. There are so many obstacles and things in the way of getting what one wants—chances to fall down, screw up, topple over. There are lots of reasons to throw in the towel, except in farce—and especially in this play—no one ever does. They keep going,” said Bradley.
