IRT’S SUMMER PROGRAMS OFFER EXTENSIVE TRAINING FOR YOUTH INTERESTED IN THE PERFORMING ARTS4/10/2017 Each year more than 40,000 Indiana students visit the Indiana Repertory Theatre to see a live theatre performance. This unique relationship with students makes the Theatre an anomaly in the performing arts world, engaging more students annually than many of its national peers.
“As an arts leader in the state of Indiana, we have a distinct responsibility to use theatre as a tool to bring meaning into the lives of youth – but our work doesn’t stop once the curtain closes,” said Janet Allen, IRT Executive Artistic Director, who shares that the IRT is dedicated to engaging youth long after their live theatre experience has ended. Part of the IRT’s commitment can be seen through its Summer Youth Workshops, which have impacted more than 920 students since 2004. “Our educational programs inform young people what a career in theatre can be as an actor, dancer, producer, playwright, carpenter, electrician –you name it,” said Allen. “Our programs provide real-life experiences and skills to students who are either exploring theatre for the first time, or who have decided a career in theatre is right for them.” In the two-week Step On Stage workshop, students of all levels receive instruction in acting, musical theatre, dance, movement, voice and Shakespeare. The four-week Summer Conservatory for Youth is an audition-based immersion into the creative process of theatre for those who have an advanced passion and understanding of the performing arts. Both programs are led by professional actors, artists and educators. “Summer Workshops are a unique opportunity to spend time learning with working professionals in the performing arts,” said Randy D. Pease, IRT Director of Education. “Through a process-based approach, students learn about the techniques an actor uses to prepare while building confidence in themselves and their voice.” Do you know someone ages 8-18 interested in theatre?
