This season’s Exploring Stages show is Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!”, a joyful musical written by award-winning author Mo Willems. The IRT’s Exploring Stages series strives to introduce children ages 3-8 to the theatre through a youth-serving show, pre- and post-activities, and close-up floor seating. However, on stage at the IRT isn’t the only place where children can join in on the fun of Elephant & Piggie and the theatre experience!
Throughout the run, IRT is working with a variety of community organizations to help bring fun and educational storytimes to children around the city. In partnership with United Way, the IRT is sending teaching artists to various program centers to lead children’s programs focused on the theatre experience and the Elephant & Piggie book series. United Way is also underwriting thousands of preschool students’ tickets to see the musical at the IRT and receive their own Elephant & Piggie book.
Similar to the storytimes hosted at United Way’s program centers, the teaching artists are also leading events at various Indianapolis Public Library branches and local bookstores. At these storytimes, teaching artists will read a Mo Willems’ book, talk about what seeing a show at the theatre is like, and lead a craft or activity, like creating a puppet, acting out a story, or learning steps from one of the dances.
