Lex Lumpkin makes his IRT debut as Stuart, in Stuart Little. We interviewed the Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate School fifth-grader to learn more about who Lex is off stage -and this kid is sure to keep you smiling.
IRT: In your own words, can you tell us what Stuart Little is about? LEX: Stuart Little is about a boy-like-mouse who is adopted by a human family. He loves exploring the outside world but while doing this he often gets attacked by dogs. Stuart Little is courageous, funny and has grit. He tolerates the family cat and falls in love with a particular bird named Margalo. IRT: We see that Stuart Little is the first play you have ever been in – what inspired you to audition? LEX: Ever since I was a little boy I would ask my mom if she could sign me up for plays, movies or commercials. So one day my dad signed me up for an acting camp at IRT and I loved it. A month later I was invited to come audition for the role of Stuart Little. I was excited about this opportunity. IRT: How have you been getting ready for the production? LEX: I prepared for the production by reading the book, doing a character analysis, watching the movie and studying my lines with my mom. IRT: We see that you are interested in writing books, football and playing the piano – what amazing skills! What encourages you to learn and be interested in such diverse hobbies? LEX: I taught myself how to write books because I like comics and making up my own superheroes and villains. (Some of my good guys: Waterman, Speedy and the Baby of Heaven. Some of my bad guys: Baby of Death and Portal man). I love the game of football because it's a team sport and no man can win the game all by himself no matter how good he is. Finally, as for piano, my mom makes me play, but I love when my classmates ask my music teach to let me play in class. IRT: Are you currently working on a book? Can you tell us about it! LEX: Yes I am. I'm currently writing two books: "Truth Land" (about a kid who gets himself wrapped up in so many lies that there is a witch that takes him to the land of truth) and "The Craziest Dream" (about a guy who has a dream about a bunch of donuts, cookies and warm milk). IRT: Anything you want to share with your fans? LEX: I have fans? I think they would have fun, be entertained, laugh at some of the jokes and feel Stuart Little's emotions about Margalo.
