“Boeing Boeing contains all the elements of a traditional French farce: physical comedy, mistaken identities, lightning-fast dialogue and an exaggerated, outrageous, improbable plot,” said director, Laura Gordon. “For this production, we’ve brought together an outstanding group of actors who are highly skilled, passionate and accomplished classical actors—who also happen to be incredibly funny.”
Among them are Hillary Clemens and Matt Schwader, who were most recently seen in IRT’s 2015 production of The Great Gatsby as Daisy Buchannan and Jay Gatsby. Clemens and Schwader happen to be married in real life.
“The last time Matt and I were on the IRT stage together, his character was obsessively in love with mine. This time, I have to share him with two other women,” said Clemens jokingly.
The duo joins their cast members in a one-room set with seven doors and lots of hinge-swinging action.
“I needed to arrange those seven doors with good visibility for all, since fast entrances and exits are important,” said scenic designer Vicki Smith, adding that Gabriella (played by Melisa Pereyra) Gloria (played by Clemens) and Gretchen (played by Greta Wohlrabe), who are simultaneously engaged to Bernard (played by Schwader), are constantly running in and out of doors throughout the performance.
Gordon shares that the goal of Boeing Boeing “is to simply make us laugh.”
